This
technique bursts and displaces the existing corroded/encrusted
cast iron main allowing a new pipe to be pulled into its path.

Mainsbursting
benefits mainly due to its comparative:-

Minimized
surface disruption to the highway & costly restoration. |
 |
Minimized
disruption to traffic and reduced congestion. |
Operation
The
pipe, to be replaced is exposed and cut at two points 100m
apart. The hydraulic pipebursting rig is positioned in the
'reception pit' and steel rods are individually connected
and pushed through the middle of the existing main.
Once
inserted to the 'launch pit' the cutting head and expander
are attached to the solid steel rods and the new PE pipe is
connected via a towing head to the rear.
The
hydraulic pipebursting rig is switched into reverse and the
steel rods withdrawn and removed whilst pulling the cutting
head, expander and new PE pipe into the path of the old main.
This
action splinters and cracks the existing main and the expander
displaces the fragments into the surrounding soil.
